Does anyone else have problems with their television service with MDU? I have been calling them almost once every 2 months because of a channel being out or multiple channels being out. This has already happened 3 or 4 times this year (2008). I am really concerned that we are moving to MDU Internet service too. If it's anything like the television service then I think we might end up getting even worse Internet speed than currently provided by A-Net, which is also so bad. It is slow and I have experienced multiple hours of outages early morning at least 2 times in the last year I have been living here.

I have asked Steve to make sure the contract he or the Board signs states the bandwidth and speed we are guaranteed because every company now a days claims "high-speed" even though they are only twice as fast as dial-up. Whether or not he made any progress is beyond me.

You may want to do this test....
Go to any of the PCs in the business center. Run the Test Internet Connection from the Vonage website http://www.vonage.com/help
Compare the download and upload speed to what you get in your unit on your PC. You will see a Huge difference. I suspect they allow for the offices and common areas to get more bandwidth than individual units.

Does anyone know who is allowed to run for the Board? Do you have to be a unit owner, do you have to live here full time, can you be a renter? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

We should go bsck to the old method of coffee pts. The coffee machine is frequently broken due to extensive use.

Anonymous said...

I think the coffee machine should be avail in the evenings too.. I frequently work at night around 8 or 9 and coffee would be appreciated

Regarding the multiple coffee posts....

1. I think I definitely prefer the new Starbucks machines as opposed to the coffee pots and I think overall most people agree. However, because many people also like it, NO ONE abides by the one cup per resident rule. As a result the machine breaks and the coffee bean runs out. I think this is why they cannot afford to run the machines all day and through the evenings. However, I do agree, it would be nice if coffee was offered all day.

2. Perhaps to prevent further machine breakdown they should enable the cup size selection. I understand they restrict it to the small size because they don't want people to drink so much Starbucks coffee on their dime, however, you have people bringing their huge coffee pitchers and thermals and running the machine on the small cup size like 5 times in a row. NO WONDER THE MACHINE BREAKS.

So to conclude, let us choose larger size cups of coffee cuz that will help cut down your machine breakage frequency. Then you can run the machine all day. It's not fair that residents don't get the coffee in the afternoon/evening, but contractors who are here at 7am would get the coffee. What's up with that????

Has anyone noticed this place is becomming a hotel like setting..? There are soo many kids under 18 in club 9 with no pass to get in. The sneak under the door where the sensor is and the door opens. Where are the parents??

Anonymous said...

I have noticed the kids too. Especially when school was still in session, at around 3 pm after school lets out, a bunch of them would take over all the computers in the business center. They would play loud music and scream over the cubicles at each other. There is a sign that forbids cell phone usage in the business center, perhaps that is not the problem. We need a "Rules For Use" placard by the business center, club 9, gym, pool, all common areas and those should include kids under 18 have to be with an adult.

Anonymous said...

Why isn't management noticing the kids - we are talking under age 16 in club 9 at night, with no ass to get in, and no adult. WHY can't they have a kiddie room? Why are residents allowing kids with no fob to enter? After 8 pm, there should be a no kid allowed -- they even play marco polo in the resistance pool. This is getting out of hand.

Anonymous said...

I spoke to management about this and they said during off hours if we have any problems we should call the front desk. The front desk is supposed to log all calls and bring it to management's attention the following business day. Meaning, we call, report there are unauthorized kids in the Club room and pool and they could either send up a maintenance person to rectify the situation or they will just log the issue and management will look at it and decide how to address it. Please keep calling everytime you see something like this because the more we raise issues, the more likely they will resolve it. They always put the responsibilty back onto us, like, if the coffee machine is broken, we have to report it. If a treadmill is broken, we have to report it or it doesn't get fixed. We need to have all residents call the front desk everytime we see this happen. You can even use the fax machine in the business center to call. or just take the elevator down to the lobby and tell them in person and make sure they log the issue in the book.

anyone thats complaining about the kids needs to chill out. i have been here for 2 weeks and not had a problem. if its that bad ask the kids to stop not the manegment. there is nothing wrong with kids being in club nine if they behave without a parent.

Anonymous said...

The kids are out of control and now billard balls are missing..cues are all over the place and no parent is around. They sneak in here and pool, and when asked if they are a resident they say nothing or they forgot the fob.

Dog problems - 9th floor near a SE corner unit. The dog barking can be heard through the hall, ceilings, and well in to the bedrooms of other units. The dog owner needs to get a handle on this by training their over sized pet, at least from the sound the dog makes. This has been a consistent issue. If this dog owner can please stand up and take control of the issue, it would be appreciated. Thank you.

you guys need to stop complainig about the kids get a life there just kids for god sake .its a guy here that get drunk in the club 9 room all the time and u guys not complaining about that and its a person that smoke weed in the building and u can smell it all on the bacony so since u complainin about the kids yall need to complain about yo self

Anonymous said...

Geeze... First of all this is NOT KIDDIE CAMP. Club 9 is NOT for kids ,nor is it a babysitting place. Take a look around at the missing equipment. 7-10 yr olds barely see over the table, yet billards are missing and cue sticks are missing. Tell the parents to get a grip on their kids or hire a sitter.
Second- file a complaint about the dog owner - the poor dog may be in distress.

To all Posters (young & old):

Everyone is free to post complaints about whatever they experience. Some people are more sensitive to certain things therefore certain things bother them more than others. This is perfectly fine. If the kids reading these posts are offended that there are so many people complaining about them, then why don't you just change your behavior instead of posting comments telling everyone to shut up and stop complaining? That just shows the level of your maturity. If people want to complain about kids, please do. If the kids continue to act immature by posting comments, this will just provide further proof that there are too many unsupervised kids running about in the common areas of this building (the image of a hotel at Disney comes to mind).

For the dog issue and the drug/smoker issue, if you feel this is an urgent matter you should contact the management office ASAP. If they are not willing to do anything about this, then please continue to post complaints here. The goal is for all current tenants and future tenants to know what kind of service the management office provides.

Again, there is no point in getting mad at each other. Your dissatisfaction should be directed towards management for not enforcing rules such as no unsupervised kids, no strangers in common areas, and no over sized dogs. Remember, we all pay an absurd amount of money every month and part of it goes towards the high quality service that was promised to us. If we feel we are not receiving what was promised, we need to speak up. During off hours does everyone know we can call the front door staff to report issues? The number for the West tower is already posted on the home page. If you need the East tower number, just call the West tower number and have them give you the number. They can probably also transfer you over.

Does anyone own a car in the building and sometimes after shopping need to park in front of the building for 15 minutes to unload but either the valet has taken up all the spaces on the West tower side or some car is parked there (god knows how long)with no flashers or all the spaces are taken on the East tower side from people shopping at Jewel or waiting to pick up someone from the Red Line? This is very frustrating and is there something that could be done about this?

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know if management reads this or even knows if they are aware of this blog? Does grand Plaza have an official site?

Anonymous said...

I heard that one of the owners of multiple units here that rents out these units for income found out about all the comments on this website and supposedly brought it to management's attention cuz she was afraid it would affect her ability to rent out units in the future. Not sure if management is reading on a daily basis.

The Grand Plaza has multiple websites, however none of them are for residents to post comments. The websites are all for either rentals or sales. They are smart enough not to have a public website for residents. Don't you think?

Has anyone heard that in September we are changing the internet to MDU?

Anonymous said...

regarding the kids.. there seems to be 3 "families" that allow under 16 kids... Per management.. do not open the door for them..they need a parent or guardian over age 16... if the sneak in...call doorman to send someone up.

Anonymous said...

Regarding the post about the Internet changing over to MDU. I guess you are in the East tower because over on the West tower we already switch to MDU Internet (originally A-Net). Be forewarned, it is not faster then before. I have been switched over to MDU internet since end of July and our download speed is on average 1.1 Megs. The upload speed is only 150K with a ping response of 120 ms. To put it into perspective, if you lived in a single family home and were to get comcast you would have at least 6-7 Megs download speed compared to our 1.1 Meg.

Anonymous said...

ys, I am in the east tower. I had MDU at my old building a few blocks from here, and while it was only 1 tower w/45 floors, MDU was ok 95%of the time- AND we didn't have to pay almost 300 deposit for it. I hope we get MDU.

Anonymous said...

You probably also had a higher download speed. It sounds like your previous building was more generous. Since the Grand Plaza seems like they are cutting back on all expenses, I would highly doubt they sign up for the fastest bandwidth with MDU. I suspect once you get MDU, you will agree with me the download speed sucks.

Has anyone noticed that the computers in the cafe do not work all the time? there are 3 that dont have an internet connection and volume controls dont work...

What's up with all those cleaning crews that come during the day???? With them and their carts and cleaning equipment in the hallways, it really feels like we are living in a hotel.

I understand people hire cleaning service, but why do the crew have to leave their stuff outside the apt? When I clean my apt I do not leave the vacuum, broom, and mop outside in the hallway. Also, its not cool they yell through the hallways in non-English. Afterall this is supposed to be a luxury building. I do not need to hear their conversations in my unit. Management should address this with them.

WEST TOWER RESIDENTS
Did you notice Sudler automatically deducted 2007 Tax Fee along with last month's assessment charge? When Steve was still our manager he explicitly said that they WILL NOT AUTOMATICALLY deduct from our debit account. It is a HUGE amount and it caused a lot of residents to be withdrawen. Why was Sudler authorized to do this? Is there a lawyer in the building that can help pursue this issue for us?

Anonymous said...

I can't believe how far this building is going downhill...or how fast. Noone seems to care. I hope the word gets around to realtors and other web sites.

Residents, please share your frustrations at the monthly board meeting. Anonymous posts do little good and mostly foster frustration amongst other residents.

Renters, please share your issues with your landlord, who should forward your issues to the management company.

Seems like everyone is barking up the wrong tree.

The previous post sounds like it was from someone related to either the Board of Directors or from the management and/or sales office as it was posted in multiple sections on this website.

What they do not understand is that many people who complain on this website have already approached the management office and their issues were not addressed to satisfaction therefore they resort to online venting.

If you are from management posting on this website, please leave a contact name, number or email instead of posting anonymously. Like you said anonymous posts do little good so we were disappointed to see you did not sign your post. We do not need the "general" management office number as many of us already reported issues but nothing has been resolved. We need an escalation policy. Why not step up and take some responsibility if you truly want to improve the conditions at this building.

Does anyone else get annoyed about how some doormen want to talk so much? I mean who wants to chat up a storm everytime you come in and out. Its annoying, and I'm sure they don't love it either.

Anonymous said...

Not to sound shallow but I have notice the doormen only chat up with the single women.

Anonymous said...

I hardly think that saying good morning, hello, or good evening constitutes "chatting up a storm." I believe its called being polite and common courtesy. If you don't want to respond when someone says hello, then don't. I choose to answer and even ask how their day is going. They are doormen and women but they are also people. Live by the golden rule fellow residents.

Anonymous said...

I like the good morning from the doorman- and lady . Some aren't even nice to open the door - isn't that kinda their JOB? I wish we had a posting of their names, so we know who is who. I have been here 3 months and not sure of who is who yet.

MDU SUCKS!!!
I do not know why we use them for television service and then reward them for bad service by using them for Internet too.

I just got off the phone with MDU to report multiple channel outages (channel 10, 12, 14, 15, 18, 21, 23, 25). They have been replaced by Direct TV advertising programs and logos. When I called, the lady I spoke to said someone else had already reported the problem and the ticket # is 8282395. However, they cannot send someone to the building until Tuesday. I find this totally unacceptable as this is a confirmed outage for the entire building, multiple residents affected. Channel 14 and 25 are network channels, Fox and CBS respectively. I hope you agree that to have 2 network channels down for multiple days is unacceptable especially for the whole building. And the worst part is this is not even due to a weather issue. It sounds like someone screwed up on their end and turned a switch off so we are watching Direct TV advertising instead of live broadcasting. This is different from outage last time when I was just getting a black screen.

9th Floor maintenance needed. Men's Steam Room on the 9th floor has hair and misc items on the wall. Spider webs are on every corner of the floor and ceiling. The rubber seals around the door has been broken/torn off and needs to be replaced. This has been the situation for 2 months now. It is filthy and no one cares.

Anonymous said...

The entire building is filthy especially when compared to it's spotless status when the east tower was managed by NEAR NORT PROPRTIES. U. S. Equities simply doesn't care.

Anonymous said...

Slowest Internet I've had since 1998. I can't ever get through to MDU to inquire if I can buy additional bandwidth. I can't believe I have to go to work in order to work. THAT SUCKS.

Anonymous said...

I have tried to talk to management about the things going on whether it's MDU or gym equipment failing, but it is NO USE. That is why people come here to bitch. Hopefully to warn prospective people from moving here when they do a google search. Until people stop moving into this building management will be business as usual. I was told that we have a contract with MDU until 2013. Have fun with the slow Internet. I use my 3G Internet from my cell phone provider. It is actually the same speed as MDU's High Speed Residential Internet. Amazing, right? Today is 11/18/09, since someone was asking how old these posts are.

Anonymous said...

THIS INTERNET SUCKS! I'm pretty sure I'm going to break my lease as this bullshit MDU service is costing me both time and money. This place is only suitable for people who don't need or want television or Internet.

Anonymous said...

Today is 9/7/10 and I have a 0.91 internet download speed and a 150K upload speed. I live in the west tower. Is there anyone at Grand Plaza that reads this post. Help us get faster internet. I can't even watch netflix on my xbox without it having horrible quality.

Side note: If anyone is thinking about moving here and has a Sprint cell phone: The east side of the west tower won't even hold service on the balcony, let alone get even roaming in the apartment. Move here, and change your service.

Anonymous said...

Internet Speed is a Major ISSUE. It looks like the West tower has a different provider than the East tower because the Internet speed in the Business Center is faster than what we get in our units in the West Tower.

I resorted to paying for Internet service from CLEAR. I get signal in my unit and seem to be ok in the common areas of the building.

Management should just stop bundling TV and Internet and let residents get their own providers.
